Impact on India, if USA and Russia make up their differences

When President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin met recently in Helsinki they agreed on few points which USA and Russia have never done in the past. Generally American leaders and Russian leaders disagree on almost every point even in the United Nations. During the summit, President Donald Trump said that he believed Russia had not interfered in the US elections after talking to President Vladimir Putin. Both the presidents also agreed to bring out peace in Syria together. After the meeting, there is a thought that US-Russia relations might improve. During the cold war, India came up with Non-alignment policy to avoid choosing a side between US and former Soviet Union since it had good ties especially economical with both the nations. Currently, India has good trade relations with both the countries. India imports mainly oil and machinery from both Russia and USA and exports precious stones and pharmaceuticals to both the countries. With improvement in US-Russia relations, India can further develop a more strategic partnership with both the nations. Russia is India’s largest defense equipment supplier, in other words India’s armed forces are reliant on Russia’s defense equipments. While this trade was going smooth, USA put a sanction on Russia listing 39 companies which cannot get involved in trade of significant transaction including strategic technologies and supply of spares and maintenance on which the Indian armed forces rely. If USA and Russia patch up India is going to benefit the most in the defense industry. India has been in a difficult position as Russia is alienating itself from the west and developing closer ties with China. USA already sees China as a threat to its superior position globally, with USA and Russia making up it means Russia might not interfere between India and China and try to adopt a diplomatic strategy since both the countries are its trading partners. Stability between Russia and USA would mean a trade benefit for India.  India’s trade with both the countries will go on smoothly, since currently both the countries are putting sanctions on each other to decrease trade of other country. In my opinion India can benefit in both defense and trade if USA and Russia form a strategic alliance.
